Carlos Mortensen: Racking Up The Wins
Juan Carlos Mortensen, more popularly known as El Matador in the poker circuit is one of the most exciting players to watch and go up against in the world of poker. The Hispanic player is the embodiment of everything that is exciting about the card game. If you have a friend, who says that they are not so into poker or any kind of card game, make those people watch Mortensen and their mind will surely change. Indeed, Mortensen's skill and style of play has raised the bar of playing standards and strategies in professional poker tournaments and matches today.
Mortensen, 30, was born in Ecuador but moved to Madrid, Spain. Then, seeing how exciting and compelling the poker circuit is in the United States, he decided to move to the U.S. late 90's, which he saw as one of the best winning poker tips. Mortensen was married a fellow poker player, Cecilia Reyes Mortensen but the two were divorced in 2006.
As one of the most awarded professional poker players in the world, Mortensen is always a joy to watch when he is up against opponents. His aggressive brand of playing, his bluffs that test nerves of steel, and his determination to take home the win are among his strongest suits as a poker player you can watch on television. A few years after moving from Spain to the U.S., Mortensen won the World Series of Poker in 2001. During this win, he took home $1.5 million. Then, in 2004, Mortensen won the World Poker Tour Doyle Brunson North American Poker Championship where he got more than $3.5 million. This 2004 win marked Mortensen's second title in the World Poker Tour, which made fans and professional poker players take notice of this man from Spain.
Mortensen also participated in the World Heads-Up Poker Championship where he made the prize money. He also took part in the Poker Superstars Invitational's second season where he was able to make it to the semi-finals.
In 2006, Mortensen made it to three final tables in the World Series of Poker tournament. In event number two, he finished 9th and took home more than $70, 000. Mortensen also finished 9th in even number 6 where he won $73, 000. Sadly, it was in event number 33 that he lost his chance to add a third bracelet to his name when he was just runner up to James Richburg.
Mortensen has won over $8.5 million as of last count in 2008. His WSOP account cashes in at more than $2.5 million. Mortensen is also called El Matador in the professional poker circuit. His brash style of playing that both amazes and scares audiences and opponents are very similar to that of a bullfighter. His former opponents and fans often describe his style of playing and of bluffing as "wild" or "unpredictable"; traits which endeared him to these people. With a big heart full of determination and courage, it is no wonder that Mortensen, El Matador, has achieved so much in so little time.
