Carlos Mortensen Takes Poker To A Different Intensity
As one of the most intense and exciting players in the poker circuit today, Carlos Mortensen brings fire and passion to the card game unlike anyone else. Born in 1972 to a Spanish mother and Danish father in Ecuador, Carlos was the son of a diplomat and land owner in this rich Latin American country. The family moved to Spain when Carlos was 15. As he was growing up, Carlos took an interest in poker. He graduated with a diploma in mathematics and physics. He met his wife, Cecilia and married her while he was still a student. Cecilia, now also a professional poker player and Carlos discovered poker later on when they started working. A group playing Texas Hold 'Em asked the then bartender Carlos to join them in their table. During this game, Carlos lost $100. Bothered by the loss, Carlos Stayed up all night trying to understand how he lost and how he can improve his game and from here, the rest, as they say, is history.
Carlos moved to the United States from Madrid in the late 90s. He joined several poker tournaments but did not really win anything big until the year 2001. It was in this year that he joined the ranks of the world's best poker players. He faced big names such as Daniel Negreanu, Mike Sexton, and Dewey Tomko in the World Series of Poker. He went on the win a seat in the final table and won $1.5 million, besting Dewey Tomko. It was this tournament where Carlos got his first main event win as well as his first WSOP bracelet.
Then, in 2003, Carlos won his second WSOP bracelet when won the Limit Hold 'Em tournament. The next year, Carlos took home $1 million from the North American Poker Championship where he placed first.
El Matador has continued to dominate and win several poker tournaments both in the U.S. and from abroad. He joined the European Poker Tour and placed 11th. He also holds the record as the only professional poker player who has won the World Series of Poker and the World Poker Tour at the same time. His accomplishments are already great and his winnings, huge. However, Carlos has said that he has no plans of retiring any time soon.
