As the only Hispanic winner of World Poker Series Main Event, Carlos Mortensen has won the respect and admiration of poker fans and poker players. His intense style of playing is one of the most riveting to watch during poker games, with audiences and opponents waiting for El Matador's next move.

Juan Carlos Mortensen, who turned 30 last month, was born in Ambato, Ecuador but this poker player calls Madrid as his hometown. Towards the end of the 90s, Mortensen decided to move from Spain to the United States to play professional poker. This decision was a good call as he spent just a few years in the circuit before he won a main event. In the World Series of Poker 2001 tournament, Mortensen racked up $1.5 million. In 2004, he won $1 million during the World Poker Tour Doyle Brunson North American Poker Championship.

Mortensen reached new heights when he claimed the win in another huge poker event. He won the World Poker Tour in its fifth season where he took almost $4 million home as his winnings. In this tour, he added another notch in his belt as this was his second WPT title in first place. Aside from having his second WPT title, this season win established Mortensen as one of the strongest professional poker players in the world. His season five win saw him as the only player who was able to hold a title in both the World Poker Tour as well as the World Series of Poker. It is because of this that people have high respect for El Matador and his poker playing skills.

Carlos Mortensen is considered as the last professional poker player to win a World Series of Poker main event. However, this prestigious title was taken from him by Peter Eastgate when Eastgate won the title in 2008.

Mortensen did not limit himself to the U.S. poker circuit. He also joined several poker tournaments and matches in Europe where he did not make that big of an impact. In the 2007 European Poker Tour, he only finished 11th. The tour was held in Monte Carlo where he was booted out by Joshua Prager's river flush. As of now, Mortensen has not claimed any European title nor has he reached final tables in this circuit.

If you want an idea of how this man plays on the table, just think of his nickname: El Matador or the bullfighter. Indeed, Mortensen resembles a bull fighter when he plays poker. His style is high impact, aggressive, and wild. His bluffing skills are so amazing that it is almost impossible to tell if he really has a strong hand or is just trying to bluff his way to a win. Another interesting thing about Mortensen is he stacks his chips differently. Mostly done in elaborate pyramids, if you are not riveted by this player's style, then you could marvel at how he manages to stack those poker chips so high up.
