He was born in Ambato, Ecuador in 1972. His mother is Spanish while his father was Danish. His father was a diplomat in Ecuador and he owned tracks of farming land. In 2003, Mortensen won his second WSOP bracelet. The next year, he became champion of the North American Poker Championship where he won $1 million. Moreover, ever since these first wins, Mortensen continued on to win more titles and took home more winnings. Then, he joined the European Poker Tour where he placed 11th. In 2007, he broke records when he won the World Poker Tour Five Star World Classic.
