El Matador On The Green Felt
His name is enough to make his opponents shake in their boots. Carlos Mortensen, nicknamed El Matador, is known to butcher people on the poker table with his aggressive style of playing as well as his amazing bluffing skills. El Matador has several wins and titles to back up his style. Apparently, his style and strategy is effective since he has won titles, cash, as well as a lot of recognition because of it. As much as he is feared, many people also admire Carlos' skill and smarts when he plays poker. As one of the world's best poker players, seeing Carlos fight on the green felt is like seeing a matador or a bullfighter in action.
There are many things that make Carlos an interesting player. First of these is the fact that he learned poker in the old school way. When he was still a bartender in Madrid, he was asked by men to join him on the table and play poker with them. Carlos, a person who does not like losing, stayed up the whole night thinking of how he lost and the ways he could have played the game. From here, he moved on from a simple poker table in Spain to big lavish ones in Las Vegas.
Another interesting thing about Carlos is the way he stacks his chips. While most players just stack them up in such a way that the chips are just on top of one another, Carlos stacks his in the form of pyramids. These pyramids tend to get more complicated the more bored Carlos is behind the green felt.
Aside from these, Carlos is the only poker player who was able to win both the World Series of Poker and the World Poker Tour. These titles gave Carlos two gold bracelets that crown his achievements in poker. They also serve as a testament of his skill and strategy.
In 2001, Carlos made his way to the final table of the World Series of Poker. Before reaching this, he had to face several big names in poker but bested them. When he met Dewey Tomko in the finals, Carlos won by a high-king straight and beat the three-time bracelet winner Tomko. This win marked Carlos' first bracelet as well as a $1.5 million winning.
Then, in 2004, he dominated the circuit again when he won the Doyle Brunson North American Poker Classic. He also won the World Poker Tour's fifth season. The WPT win saw him with another bracelet as well as the title of the only man who has won both the World Series of Poker and the World Poker Tour.
Carlos said that he has no plans of retiring soon. With all his accomplishments, one would think that he would want to settle with what he has and be contented with his wins and titles. However, true to the spirit of a matador, Carlos wants to fight more battles and win on the green felt.
